Volunteers participate in all areas of our organization – with clients, programs, events, governance, administration, maintenance and marketing. Volunteers are the pillar of our community and everyone will play a role. We all have something to share! Join the Hospice Vaughan family today!




GET INVOLVED AT
Who Can Volunteer?
- Individuals over 18 years of age.
- Secondary school students may earn volunteer hours at some of our events.
- Our volunteers are screened by staff, have references checked, complete a Vulnerable Sector Check and 30 hours of Core Training before they are placed in contact with clients and/or their families.
- Our volunteers are key members of our community interdisciplinary health team and they provide us with support in a variety of roles.
When Can You Volunteer?
- In-home client support is determined by the client and the volunteers.
- Program and Office support is offered during business hours or the allotted program time.
- Residential Support is coordinated in 4 hour shifts.

WAYS YOU CAN

IN-HOME VISITING PROGRAM
Providing emotional support and companionship, or respite care to caregivers. Engaging clients in activities (board games, reminiscing, looking at photo albums, or going for walks) providing caregivers relief. This role does not provide personal care or perform medical procedures.
Required Training:
HPCO Online Training; Body Mechanics, Lifts & Transfers Training; Bereavement Training
Expected Time Commitment:
1-2 hours per week (length of time commitment could vary)
OUTREACH, SPECIAL EVENTS & FUNDRAISING
Representing Hospice Vaughan in the community to create awareness and fundraise for our programs and services. They will train, prepare and actively participate in community events like our 2 signature events – Annual Gala and Hike for Hospice. Many other opportunities occur throughout the year and these volunteers are key to developing community partnerships to aid with our philanthropic goals.

At least once a month
ADMINISTRATIVE & IN-OFFICE SUPPORT
Volunteers assist with various administrative tasks such as data entry, filing, photocopying, answering the phone, handling the front desk and reception. Volunteers may also assist with in-office kitchen support, cleaning, and landscaping activities.

HPCO Online Training; Body Mechanics, Lifts & Transfers Training
Expected Time Commitment:
At least once a month
KITCHEN & NUTRITION
Volunteers assist with preparing homemade meals for our residents and families and assist with cleaning/sanitizing the main kitchen area and Family Kitchen.
Required Training:
HPCO Online Training, Kitchen/Nutrition Orientation, Food Handler Certification
Expected Time Commitment:
At least once a week
ADULT GRIEF & BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUPS
Helping to co-facilitate support groups providing emotional support to caregivers, families and friends following the death of a loved one. Supporting the development of participant’s coping skills assisting the transition through the grieving process. Examples of our support groups include child loss, parental loss, spousal loss, sibling loss or mixed-relations loss.

HPCO Online Training; Body Mechanics, Lifts & Transfers Training; Bereavement Training
Expected Time Commitment:
2 hours per week for 8 weeks
'CARING HANDS' DAY PROGRAM
Social and kitchen volunteers support the day program. Clients with life limiting illness but ability to visit our facility participate. A morning filled with socializing, bingo, light fitness and ending with a delicious lunch. Social and emotional support is provided by social volunteers & prepping, cooking and delivering lunch is in the hands of the kitchen volunteers.

OCCASIONAL SKILL SHARING
Volunteers with special skills (e.g. cooking, crafts) provide learning opportunities for clients, caregivers and volunteers who wish to participate.

RESIDENCE & FAMILY CARE

CHILDREN & TEENS' PROGRAMS
Volunteers assist children and teens with understanding loss, grief and bereavement. Using games, arts and crafts and other play techniques to help guide them through the emotions and stresses of losing a loved one. Programs include Children & Teens Grief and Bereavement Support Group and more.

Expected Time Commitment:
Once a week
COMPLIMENTARY THERAPIES
Volunteers trained and certified provide complementary therapy work with clients to provide emotional and physical support. Therapeutic remedies such as Reiki, Meditation, Yoga, Therapeutic Touch, Qigong, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Massage Therapy and Visualization/Guided Imagery plus others are welcome.

MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA
Volunteers assist with marketing-related tasks such as promoting Hospice Vaughan through our website and various social media accounts. Volunteers can also be responsible for community networking to provide awareness and education about Hospice Vaughan.
